Reading Meghan’s thoughs about “Rock Island” from The Music Man, I wondered if the shifting train rhythms of the song borrowed from Lead Belly’s “Rock Island Line,” which I know from the Johnny Cash album version (live version in the video above). Turns out it was the lead single on Cash’s debut album, which came out in October 1957, two months before The Music Man opened on Broadway.
