—Rufus Wainwright and Chris Stills, “Harvest,” live on KCRW, 29 September 2003

An autumnal song for a lovely spring day. This is more a duet than an example of a guest background vocal, but I’m captivated by the transition between the end of the second chorus and the start of the third verse, when the positions of lead vocalist and background vocalist switch between the two singers. They’re beautiful on their own, the shifting meldings of these two voices, but they also reinforce Neil Young’s lyrics, particularly the chorus—with its shift from dream to wakefulness back to a directive to dream.
