I’ve been thinking a fair bit about this word contraction since Mills’ discussion. Based on the comments it seems that Ireland is the only country in which it’s used.

That and whatever country my six-year-old lives in. It makes perfect sense to me so I see no need to correct it. “Y’all” is part of the vernacular here, covering a gap in the English language as spoken in the rest of the country; no reason not to use another useful contraction here.

Archives are at best an afterthought. Very little is considered to be of value the next day, the next week. We throw words down the whole, a few people glance at them, maybe even a lot of people, but the words keep falling, and maybe you “like” them somehow, but then they are gone and there are new words falling.

This is as good as any moment to remind you, person reading this, to go to the Tumblr dashboard and click the “Liked ___ posts” link in the upper right corner. Or go to Twitter and click on “Favorites” in the right sidebar. You will laugh, you will cry, (you will laugh so hard you will cry), you will reread something that you almost forgot you read in the first place and it will make you like it all over again, you will see something that you can’t figure out why you liked it, you will reconsider things with different eyes and realize that it’s even better/deeper/richer than you imagined.

Things you liked aren’t just some lame Greatest Hits album, they’re an internet mixtape you put together for yourself and you haven’t even listened to it yet. Now might be a good time to start.

I love how strangely graceful he looks, trampling all over the furniture, each pratfall looking easier and more lovely(!) than the one before. I want to say it’s all in his posture, how straight he holds his back. Makes everything else look wiggly. Love him.

Only six cuts once the dancing gets started. His limbs look like he’s Mister Fantastic, and without the help of CGI. So incredibly great.

My favorite part of the whole thing? That “#1” at the end of Meghan’s first line.

As well as about 13 Sting songs. Yes, I realize that this means I’m admitting to being familiar with Sting’s solo output and that it probably would’ve been better if we all just acted like most of that didn’t happen.

The other thing that comes to mind right off the bat is Freedy Johnston: Evie’s Tears (Evie’s Garden), which not only references the second song but has the same melody and appears on the same album.

Reading Meghan’s thoughs about “Rock Island” from The Music Man, I wondered if the shifting train rhythms of the song borrowed from Lead Belly’s “Rock Island Line,” which I know from the Johnny Cash album version (live version in the video above). Turns out it was the lead single on Cash’s debut album, which came out in October 1957, two months before The Music Man opened on Broadway.

In related news, someone on Twitter beat me to a killer joke about donkey pimples.
